What to do when you leave school?

Let’s get serious for a moment. What DO you do when you are finally ready to leave school and move on to bigger and brighter opportunities? Let’s Get Started!

Are you in charge of ordering your school’s 2016 leaver hoodies and are unsure of what type of artwork needs to be supplied? Do you need a quick refresher on what file types are recommended? Well good news everybody! I’m here to provide you with a brief explanation of how our graphics department works and what you will need when ordering one of our stylish leavers hoodies. To ensure your order is process efficiently and correctly we have outlined our artwork recommendations below. I also went ahead and highlighted specific keywords to emphasize their importance to both us and you. Hopefully our post will help answer your questions and put an end to “What file types do I need and why do I need it in that format”?

The Correct File Formats

Screen Printing / Digital Transfers are the most common and most cost effective way of printing hoodies, t-shirts and other garments. We require Vector Illustrator and EPS files as they are the preferred files types for these printing solutions. It’s easy to differentiate between vectors and other formats. If you zoom into a vector, you will see no jagged edges or distortion. If you zoom into a bitmap, the image and edges will become blocky.

We highly encourage you NOT creating a bitmap file and then save it as a .AI or .EPS file – it’s still a bitmap and would be unusable unless we re-draw it for a fee.

Your Colouring / Pantones

Artwork colours should be converted to spot colours within Illustrator or other graphic software you may be using. The individual colours can be selected and changed to their Pantone equivalents. Please refer to the software documentation, or browse the Internet for more details on how to do this. When we screen print, we first print one colour, then print a second colour, etc. This is the reason why we need colour separated files. We can then easily print out the files in colour separation.

Embedding Fonts and Converting Fonts

If your logo has any fonts / typefaces, then these MUST be converted to paths (OR converted to curves – depending on your software package). This simply means that the font is converted to a graphic object and cannot be changed. If this is not done, then when we receive the file and don’t have the equivalent font, we won’t be able to match your artwork.

TIF and PSD Bitmap Files – Suitable for Single Colour Prints

Artwork files must be sized to the exact size (or larger) than the actual print size and must be at least 300dpi at the print size. Colours should be separated in layers. This is not a preferred method and may incur extra costs if we have to manipulate the file.

Adobe PDF Files

PDFs must be created from vector files and maintain edit capabilities. Don’t create a bitmap file and then save it as a PDF file – it’s still a bitmap and would be unusable and would be liable for a re-draw fee.

Embroidery Process

For embroideries we require that the artwork is a high resolution .JPG, .BMP, .TIF, .EPS, .AI formats. All files types are accepted as long as the resolution is high quality.

The Embroidery Process

Do you know Ultimate Leavers Hoodies can customise your leavers hoodies with embroidered designs and logos featuring your universities? We thought it would be neat to walk you through our internal processes on how we go from your ideas to fabrication to your Ultimate Leaver Hoodie.

Picking the Right Hoodie for You

It begins when you select a hoodie from our hoodie range. Our Classic hoodie has a stylish fit and soft finish, weighted at 279gsm. If you’re not familiar with the term gsm it means grams per square meter. The higher gsm means high quality and weight of the fabrics, not to mention the warmer you’ll be! Our other hoodies aren’t without their charm and if you fancy a zip up style or a light to dark contrast street hoodie look we can get you sorted with that too!

Get Your Artwork Submitted

So you’ve picked the right hoodies for you and your classmates and submitted your artwork to our graphics department. Nice work – we’re nearly done! You’ve ended up choosing your university logo on the front and a custom 2016 leavers design with your nickname on the back. Perfect! That’s going to look great. Our sophisticated sewing machines run by our sewing operators will have no trouble crafting exactly what you want.

Digitizing

Now that we have your artwork and specifications you have provided we begin the artwork digitizing process. First the artwork is submitted to our software for digitizing and converted into a specific format for our machines to process. One common misconception is that you can just use a .jpeg or .bmp image and that will work. This simply isn’t true; in order to process the art correctly it needs to be recreated using stitches via our software. Our software tells the sewing machine to sew a specific design, in a specific colour, with a specific type of stitch. Our machines can create logos up to 12 inches in size and can use 15 colours in each design. They make light work of 25,000 stitches so that our embroidery service remains cost effective and fast.

Production

Artwork is now ready to be processed by our sewing machines. Our embroidery production is hands on and before the sewing can begin the specific thread colours must be loaded by hand into our sewing machines. A spool of coloured thread is checked against the logo colour and the sewing head must be loaded. The machine is programmed by the sewing operator and the design is set for a particular colour sequence and a particular sewing speed. The hoodies must then be “hooped” individually, by hand, and then fixed to the sewing machine. Once the design has completed, the hoodie is taken off the machine, un-hooped, and sent to our quality assurance production step.

Finishing

After the hoodies have gone through our production process they are sent through the QA department for the final finishing process. Our finishing step is one of the most important steps as we individually check each hoodie against our strict quality standards, trimming excess backing materials and removing any loose threads that may have come out from the production process. We carefully fold and pack each hoodie and give FREE shipping within mainland UK with every order.

Happy St Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is a cultural and religious celebration held on 17 March, but did you know that St Patrick wasn’t even Irish? Here are some fun facts about St. Patrick and the history surrounding this day.

Did you know that…

It’s customary to wear shamrocks and green clothing because it was a representation of the Holy Trinity to the Pagan Irish. That the color green has been associated with Ireland since the mid 1600’s. The original color associated with St. Patrick is blue, not green as commonly believed. In several artworks depicting the saint, he is shown wearing blue vestments.

It’s believed that Patrick was born in Roman Britain was kidnapped into slavery and brought to Ireland.

Patrick spent his life becoming a bishop and after his death was named Ireland’s patron saint. When the Irish emigrated to the U.S., they created the bigger celebrations and parades known today in honor of the saint.

Eighteenth century Irish soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War held the first St. Patrick Day parades. The celebrations became a way for the Irish to connect with their roots after they moved to America. The celebrations didn’t stop in the U.S. as this holiday as gained worldwide momentum and is now celebrated all over the world. From Tokyo to Chicago to Russia to Australia, St Patrick’s day is now recognized as a unoffical global holiday!

Fun Facts:

Dyeing the river green: The practice of dyeing the river green started in Chicago in 1962, when city officials decided to dye a portion of the Chicago River green. 100 lbs. of green dye is used to dye the river green!

Corn beef and cabbage: This is an Irish American dish. Irish Americans were so poor they could not afford certain meals. On St. Patrick’s Day, the best meal they could afford was beef and cabbage. It became a staple for the holiday.
